Chapter 3 – Ethnic Families

So what I always thought of African-Americans was that they were always strong, in physical and mental health. In Latinos, I’m not sure…I always thought that they were the tough people that were in gangs and would take people’s money…but now that I’m older, I can just see that TV and media were just fake. In Asian-Americans, I always thought that Asians were super smart. Always the people that got A’s in all their classes, and since I’m Asian I thought I would have that pressure on me too, but, in reality there are some Asians that really aren’t that smart. In Native-Americans, I always thought they were the type of people who hated being around society and stayed in reservoirs, and never went to school. But, I think that movies have just made Native-Americans seem that way. Middle Easterners kind of scared me. Because of so many “terrorist” attacks going on it lead me to believe that their whole purpose was to kill other people, but, believe me, I’m pretty sure they’re not like that. And in European-Americans, I don’t know…they just seem like normal people to me, and I don’t think that opinion will ever change. Most of these stereotypes came from my own experiences, and also from media. But, over the years I have met at least one person from each of these races. And they are nothing like what TV portrays them to be, so I believe that most of these stereotypes come from people who don’t know anything about the world.

Ch 4 – Switching Roles

I wouldn’t be the same person at all if I were a male person. I’m a girl, and I enjoy doing girl stuff like shopping, and having slumber-parties, painting nails, decorating, etc. See, if I were a guy and did that kind of stuff, I would probably be called feminine or gay. That is how our society is, I’m not being sexist, but, I feel like our society is telling everyone that a girl that is masculine is lesbian and every guy who is feminist is gay, but, in reality they’re really not, they just enjoy fashion, or enjoy fixing cars or something, I just think it isn’t fair that these people get treated like this. Anyway, my plans in life would have definitely changed, a lot. I enjoy dancing and playing instruments, hanging out with friends. But, if I were a guy I would probably be playing video games a ton, interacting with people over Xbox, and be a loner for the rest of my life. (Just kidding.) But, for sure anyone would have changed. There are some things when guy and girl things are blended, but, that’s fine. But, there comes a point where none of those things should blend together, it could easily destroy the meaning of gender.

Reflection #1

So as I said in the first sentence, I thought that different ethnic races had specific characteristics about them, but really, anyone from any race can have the same characteristics as others. People stereotype others because that's what they think is what one race does, but it's what they think. You don't have to follow along with what everyone else thinks, I just believe that everyone shouldn't believe one thing, especially when it comes to stereotyping people, use your own thoughts.

Reflection #2

Anyone should be allowed on choosing their appearance.  It's okay to switch roles, you're still getting the job done, you just have decided to fix up the car while your husband is cleaning the house, it doesn't matter. What I don't understand is how people end up calling them names because they wanted a change. I believe that it's fine to have your roles switched around or even blended together, it's their choice and you shouldn't have to criticize them for making their own choices.
