HIST 1700

History Repeats?

A question that always comes up is, “Does History Repeat?” I find that question true, because every twenty five years, a new generation of people re-invent the will, they refuse to study the past and continue repeating the same things. Things that I’ve seen repeat is music, movies, fashion, and cars.

Starting with cars, the style of cars in the 1960’s usually had the same, big framework. The cars tend to have the same bodies, just different styles.  You would think they look funky, but now, in year 2013, cars styles are starting to revert back to the 1960’s, maybe even the 1920’s. The only thing that has stayed constant with cars is their gas mileage.

For fashion, every girl is going for vintage looks. Style is going back into the 1970’s and 1980’s. Some girls even go back to the 1960’s with hippie style, or should I say “Boho”. I was able to find this “law” that shows you about the cycle of fashion. How wearing high-waisted pants lost its fad in the 1980’s-ish, and how it’s now coming back. There are some trends that should never be started again, while some trends are interesting. It’s like going back in time with fashion, see what it was like a decade ago. Hopefully rompers will go become the next big trend.

Music and movies have never been original. For music, artists re-sing an old 1980’s song, then it goes viral, like the Cup Song for example. I recently found out that two girls from the 1960’s made that song, but they took that song from another artist. Now, the movie Pitch Perfect has taken that song and made it go viral. See how this works, someone will get credit for someone else’s song. For movies, they haven’t been original either, they’re usually remakes of older movies that were extremely cheesy. Music and movies just one of those things that will always repeat, in fifty years, there will probably be another remake of Iron Man, or something along those lines.

No one knows why we go through repeating cycles. It’s just one of those things that happens and goes unnoticed. It’s like I said in the beginning, we don’t look into the past, and that’s why we get all these renewals when it comes to small things like clothing, media, etc. It’s just like how the Earth revolves around the Sun.
